Which alternator are you running
« on: July 10, 2016 - 11:21:01 AM »
I need a single pully alternator but I tried 3 new ones and all 3 kept running full field. Put the dual pully on and it works just fine. Is there one that someone has gotten recently that works how it should

I was going to say your VR is bad, or the wire is grounded. But if a fourth works properly, perhaps you connected the first three wrong? Could still be a grounded wire though, just not grounded at the moment. Maybe trace the field wire.

Normally I would say you are on track, but just had the same issue with another car. Took the single pully brand new alt off and slapped my two pully on it with the same wiring set up and it worked fine. Put an OLD single pully on and it worked good. Leads me to believe something is not right with the new single pully alts. I wired all of the alternators that I put on my car the same way. Bought new VRs too just to check. All the single pully ones ran full field which pushes 18 volts through the system and boiled my battery

Then they are different types of alt electrically (internally).

yup. That's why I'm asking what people are running to try and get the right one. I got 2 from O'Reilly and one from Autozone. All did the same thing
