Sector Support Kit
« on: January 11, 2016 - 04:59:02 PM »
Hey guys,

Anybody try this sector support kit from Firm Feel?  If so what do you think?

Or do you think just welding up the brackets around the PS box would do the same thing?

I got one, but it's a long way from being tested yet. Seems nicely made though. Also curious to see if anyone tried it.

I've tested it on 2 vehicles with good success in both.  Definitely firms up the steering.

I have the k member plate kit from FF installed and have purchased the sector support, but not installed yet.  I figure that anything that tightens up the steering handling is a good thing.

I have it. I am not able to independently analyze its function since I did a complete car rebuild, and not just the singular sector shaft modification.  My steering is precice but still has too much play between left to right transitions.  Probably not the fault of the sector shaft support though.

It should be able to source out the "dead" spot in the steering though.  The support puts the shaft in double sheer, instead of single sheer, so that should take out some "wiggle".  But sounds like the box you have might be a big off?  Is it new?  Rebuilt?  Original?

My box is a firm feel stage 2 or 3.  Not sure because it was in the car when I bought it.  Im sure the sector shaft bearing is doing its job.  I think a fix would be to install the long pitman arm (which I have on a shelf) and idler arm, but I can't because I have TTi exhaust that barely clears the idler arm now.  I had to compromise something during my build and this was it.  I chose the exhaust, and now I have to deal with mopar steering instead of BMW steering.  Maybe then ratio is what throws it off and makes it feel less precise than I would like it.  I actually like my box otherwise.

daveh, I think the sector shaft support is worth the investment if you are looking at making your car perform better.  The steering box mount is notorious for being flexible, especially if you are running large tires and putting huge cornering/steering forces into it.  Anything to help that will only translate to better steering.  If you just have a low hp cruiser with skinny tires and have no possibility of seeing a curvy road much less an autocross track, it probably won't matter. These cars are expensive, and I figured the $$ was worth the possible advantages of creating a better steering and suspended car.
