Timing chain inspection on 70 383
« on: December 05, 2015 - 09:43:37 PM »
In the process of working through some issues on my 70 Challenger engine, I need to check for correct cam timing chain as it may be off. My question is, is it necessary to remove the oil pan and gasket when removing the front engine cover. The engine is still in the car and photos I have looked up make it look like I need to do this. Is the case and is there a way around it?

Thanks

You don't have to pull the pan but  you will need a gasket used to replace the timing cover. It should come in a gasket kit for the timing cover.

Thanks MJ, a front cover gasket includes the part over the tip of the pan then?

You do know if you need to check for chain stretch you don't have to pull the cover - right? Or is there another problem you're chasing?

Hi Moper, the issue is related to my other posts on low compression. Was going to check for correct indexing of cam to crank. Problem is likely low CR pistons.
Thanks
