There is probably a special place in Hell for these people
« on: December 16, 2015 - 08:39:00 PM »
I'm just ranting here.

Got a call from my mother-in-law yesterday.   She started the conversation saying one of my sons "made me promise not to tell you" (never a good start).   She had been called by someone posing as my son telling her that he had been arrested after getting into a fight in a bar and "accidentally" punching a policeman.   He needed money to get out of jail, but didn't want my wife or me to know about it.  He turned his phone over to a "lawyer" that was helping him.  Instructions for sending the money were provided... cash deposit to an account at a local branch of a national bank was better because they wouldn't have to wait for a check to clear to get my "son" released before Christmas.  Long story short, she ended up getting scammed for almost $15,000 over the span of two days.  At this point, odds of recovering any of the money are pretty slim.

This is apparently a pretty active scam across the country.   The FBI is involved in the investigation.    It was a really bad choice by in-laws to fall for this, but damn the people behind this are evil to prey on elderly.

Wow that's the first time I heard of this one, of course I live in a small town and don't listen to the news anymore. No I didn't vote for obamer I'm smarter than that. Sorry to hear that, I would be out for blood even for my mother inlaw. Why do people work so hard to not earn a living? Oh that's right there is plenty of free stuff for the taking.  :swear:

Heard a very similar scam. Not remembering exactly, but something like this; Grandson arrested for supposedly fighting in Mexico on spring break, lawyer calls grandparents, don't tell family, gotem for about the same money can't remember exactly how much. Yup this stuff is very low. I can only guess the scammers are getting info off of Facebook or some other social media is my guess to put a scam like this together?

One I've been getting lately, every couple or 3 weeks I'll check the voicemail on my home phone and find a message from someone with a heavy Indian accent telling me they are from "the enforcement division of the IRS and I need to call them or a warrant will be issued for my arrest with law enforcement".  I got one that had a computer generated voice calling herself "Rachel".  I get a good laugh out of these, I even save the messages to listen to when I need a laugh, but regularly I'll see something in the police report in the paper where someone got taken by one of these calls for thousands of dollars.
I've also got calls from Indians telling me they are from Microsoft security and my computer is infected and sending out spam, and he is going to help me.  I try to drag those calls out to waste as much of their time as possible.  Mess with them like tell them I have dial up and need to get off the line, and can you call me on my cell.  I proceed to give them the FBIs phone number to call me back on!
Then there are the auto extended warranty pests.  Last one asked me the mileage of my 09 Challenger, I said about a million miles.  They questioned that, I said I commute from Chicago to LA every day, miles really add up.... Have a nice day they replied and hung up on me.
Not so funny though when you hear about how much money these crooks con people out of.

It's sad in how some crooks prey on the elderly people. But JH27N0B, you are really trolling them ! :smilielol:

yeah that's awful.  im so sorry for your mother in law.  almost identical thing happened to my grandfather just a couple weeks ago.  got a call from his "grandson" (only has my brother and I) who was talking funny because he hurt his throat down in Honduras.  the grandson also got in some legal trouble and needed money asap.  they only tried to get 1000 out of my grandfather but thankfully he caught on.  its terrible that these things happen
