1970 Challenger wheel lip moldings?
« on: December 30, 2015 - 07:22:14 PM »
I was always under the impression that wheel lip moldings were standard on all 1970 Challengers except A66 340 cars and TA's. There is a low mileage rotisserie restored 70 Hemi Challenger being sold at the next Mecum auction that doesn't have these moldings?? :clueless:  What do you guys think?

I've definitely seen some high-dollar-resto 70s without the moldings.

I always assumed it was a delete option...

Gorgeous car.

I took them off my '71 and think Challengers look better without the molding.

I noticed when I was working at MCACN in November assigned to watch the hemi cuda and Challenger convertible feature that some had moldings and some of them didn't.  I seem to recall hearing in the past that early production hemi E bodies got wheel well moldings and later didn't.  Maybe because of issues with the sidewalls of the F60X15 front tires getting sliced by the moldings?
That Mecum Challenger is a very late production car IIRC, one of a handful of N96 Challengers made toward the end of the 1970 model year.  The shaker hood option was put on hold for Challengers early in the model year until the hood could be redesigned to incorporate crumple zones and not made available again until April of 70 after the design change was made and production of the hood tooled up.

Good info!  Thanks for clearing that up for me.
