front drums to disc on '67 cuda
« on: December 30, 2015 - 07:33:17 AM »
i did a search of topics with no luck (i'm new at this forum stuff, so forgive me if this is a subject that has been discussed at length already)
i'm interested in switching my front drum brakes to disc on my 67 barracuda (273 V8 notchback, 14" wheels) but a friend told me to see if disc can be used on my spindles. how do i figure that out? and couldn't i just change out the spindles to convert to disc?
and if my budget doesn't allow for such a conversion...would front drums just mean adjusting and getting used to harder braking?
(i'm a child of disc brakes...i know nothing else)

this article should answer most of your questions on the procedure
http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive/disc-main.html

I'd say do it if this is going to be a driver... I don't believe the spindles are an issue...
Some kits include new spindles, but not necessarily stock style parts http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rsd-mdc66wkc/overview/year/1967/make/plymouth/model/barracuda
Things you need to be aware of, some 14" rims will not work with disk.
Most of the "stock" swap rotors mentioned in the article have a different lug pattern than your car came with so your wheels wouldn't work.

You can also call Cass at Dr Diff, he may have something or at least be able to steer you in the right direction.  Good guy!  http://www.doctordiff.com/brakes/#ty%3Bpagination_contents%3B%2Fbrakes%2F

You may need a new master cylinder and proportion valve to provide the proper pressure (fluid) to the disc as they require more than drums.  I would HIGHLY recommend putting discs on the front for safety.

Scarebird often has very common parts to do the swap using your drum spindles .

I did not search the site but I am sure they have a system to swap to front disc brakes that is relatively simple & cost effective the biggest change  will be the different bolt pattern as very few cars used 4" so you can swap to the much more common 4.5" so you may want to change the rear axles so the bolt pattern will match all around .  I highly recommend disc over drum , there is a reason all cars & trucks switched to them years ago
