1970 steering column in/out play
« on: January 07, 2016 - 03:23:04 PM »
Has anyone encountered in /out play in the steering shaft if you take the steering wheel and push/pull?

Thank you r/t , do you have any recommendations where I can get a snap ring for it?

Bearing..   http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOPAR-BEARING-Steering-Column-A-B-E-body-Plymouth-Dodge-Chrysler-Cuda-Charger-/221987224555

Snap rings, take it apart & match them up, shouldn't be to hard to source... I believe they are 3/4 external, they are a little different from generic snap rings but standard generic snap rings would work find & I doubt any car show judges would notice

The car (as long as I own it) will never be in a judged event, pure enjoyment only!  Lol

Was always wondering if it will completely separate while driving one day if I pull back on the wheel.

R/t,  so basically once I take the steering wheel off, if the snap ring is missing this can be the issue alone?  Any ideas How could I check that bearing once the steering wheel is off?

When you pull the steering wheel you expose the lock plate, you remove the lock plate by getting the sleeve in the center off then drive out the roll pin.... Now your looking at the turn signal switch... In the center of the turn signal switch is the bearing, it's secured to the steering column by a plate that also captures the turn signal switch... Three screws & the plate is out.. There is a snap ring on the shaft that passes through the bearing... Then the bearing comes out & the is a second snap ring below the bearing...  After you remove the turn signal switch there are three screws that mount the upper housing to the column, if you remove those it helps in getting the bearing off the shaft..

Once you dig into it the problem should be apparent...
