Fuel pressure regulator necessary???????
« on: January 13, 2016 - 10:06:45 PM »
Running a mechanical fuel pump on my 383, ran fine before an old-timer drag racer was determined to put a fuel pressure regulator on it,  ended up making no noticeable difference,  I don't like this piece of hardware on it, any truth to the old timers thoughts? Or should I just take it off and call it a day?

Won't hurt anything since you are not "regulating" the pressure at all. I have never run one on a mech fuel pump engine, not to say that they dont have a place but if you are running a "normal" mech pump, I dont see a real need. Now, if you are running something more exotic and capable of higher pressures (above about 12 psi), you might want to leave it. If you go too high, you can cause issues with the carb flooding.

Lets see what some of the racers say.
Current Mopar
70 Challenger RT 440-6 EFI, 73 Cuda 416-6 EFI
05 Hemi Durango, 01 Ram 4x4, 14 Ram 2500 4X4, 10 PCP Challenger 6 spd RT, 01 Viper GTS ACR, 52 B3B w/330 Desoto Hemi, 70 Hemi RR (under const)
Past Mopars
9 x Challengers. AAR Cuda, 4 RR, 2 GTX, 4 Chargers, etc... (too many to list)

The carb can handle 7 PSI max , 6 is better , if the pump is under 7 PSIthere is no need for the reg

Challenger - You`ll wish You Hadn`t

6 is where you want it. They can bring their own problems too. I am taking the one off my orange car. It is impeding flow. I am either going to put a lower pressure pusher pump near the tank or a higher flow regulator and I hate the way they look.

Think I read somewhere that a normal carb can withstand up to 12 psi (which is why I typed that). Could be wrong, by 6 pack runs around 6-7psi.

Definitely could have been done better. Hanging all of that on the metal fuel line is an invitation to cracking.

You could move it on the inner fender and then have a flexible fuel line to the carb. Just a thought.
