Help building a "correct-ish" set of plug wires for my Six Pack?
« on: February 02, 2016 - 10:27:23 AM »
Running into a bit of a snag in my goal of creating a factory-appearing 440 Six Pack in my '73... No one makes restoration plug wires for a 73, that I've seen, and if they did, they wouldn't work well w/ headers.

The headers are a call I made awhile ago... as I couldn't justify the huge restriction of stock manifolds. I may change my mind down the road, but for now I'm keeping 'em.

That said, I need to build a new set of plug wires and I'd like them to look as close to stock as possible. One of the things I've noticed on the more correct 440 Six Packs is that there's a mix of 90 degree and coil-type straight boots that connect at the distributor.

Like so... http://www.nicksgarage.com/aircleaner/70_440-6_06.jpg

My question is: which cylinders get which type of boot? I'm assuming that there's a set pattern... ?

Get a hold of Firecore.  They will make you a custom set that looks stock.  There is no date coding.  Give them a call, they probably are knowledgeable of lot of header configurations.

2nd choice would be to buy a universal set and cut and fit the way you want to run the wires to the plugs. This way you can clear the headers properly and have  a neat plug wire arrangement. More work but worth it IMHO.

ya, on my 496, I have all wires going to left of carb, from distributor, except
one goies under water pump to #1.

I assume you want correct boots for spark plugs too, in addition to distributor?

Actually, no. I'm gonna put straight boots at the plugs. Prob w/ some black thermal sleeves over them. That just seems like the best way to go to keep them away from header tubes.

thermal sleeves can catch fire

I come up from bottom, under headers, with right angle plugs, except on a couple

I agree you can install factory style wires as you would with stock manifolds. Up from the bottom and 90 degree angle boots at plug. I ran headman headers and used the stock plug wires.

Instead of expensive heat resistent sleeves, on both my cars I took a 1 inch diameter
aluminum broom handle, and cut 3 to 4 inch sections out, and slipped them over the
plug boots and wires, near the headers.

Actually, you don't even have to unplug wires to put them on. Just cut them down the middle,
open them up, put them on, then crimp them back down.
