Carb for STOCK 383 ?
« on: February 05, 2016 - 11:21:00 AM »
I know, the rule of thumb is 2 x 383. so a 750 is the most common to use, but is it the most practical for street use ?
My engine is a stock 383 that's "suppose" to have an HP cam and has HP exhaust manifolds with an Eldebrock Thunder AVS(vacuum secondary's) 650 and an Eldebrock Performer intake. I also have a Tremec 5 speed. Wife and I love cruising around and maybe driving 100miles in a day so I don't want to see my mileage really hurting. But I would like more kick when I stomp the throttle when first taking off, but will not be going through the gears street racing or anything like that.

For various reasons I will get a Holly, but am undecided on which one.
650 double pump mechanical or.....

750 single or dual inlet.

750 vacuum or mechanical

it depends on a couple of factors:

1) How beefy is your cam - you might want the double pumper
2) Do you care about mileage - vacuum secondary carbs provide for better fuel economy

I like dual inlets for the float bowls but this comes down to preference.

With a manual trans you can get away with more as you can control the load better , learning to drive is 1/2 the trick also , the load also depends on rear gear ratio . Generally  a double pump is best but flooring it at 800 rpm may not work , 1/2 open & roll in works awesome or full throttle @ higher rpm so you are cruising at 2500 rpm & slam it open & it will jump !!  .
I would look at the 750 HP series or the Proform 750 race series  both are extremely adjustable & will give very good milage as long as you can keep your foot out of the loud pedal
You will notice an instant gain in throttle response with a Holley / Porform over the AVS Thunder  you have now  :2thumbs:

I have a 71 road runner 383 four speed that came with a holley 600 from the factory. At 90k miles the car ran a 14.8 in the quarter and would get 17 mpg on the highway. I also had a 70 chrysler new yorker 300 with a 440 rated at 350 hp and it came with a 600 cfm holley. With an overdrive you can run low gears for the launch and still cruise for fuel economy.
