« on: February 14, 2016 - 06:59:08 AM »
hi sent my 340 to the machine shop and before I start reassembling it I want some help deciding what I want to do to it.  looking at 416 stroker kits, will I see a big difference in performance ? any down side going with stroker ?
thanks

Not really , the stroker will increase CI  & torque while reducing rotating mass

seems going from 340 to 416 would be a big increase in power
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

Plan on about 1 more pound of torque for each additional cubic inch.
As my builder and many others will tell you, "There's No Replacement For Displacement"
Torque = Seat of the pants fun! HP for top speed. My 418" 340 is not huge on HP but gives big block type torque. 418 C.I. because it is .040" over.
480 HP @ 5700 RPM and 511 Torque @ 4300 RPM
Not going to the track, not running 1/4 miles with my car. Don't spend much time over 4500 RPMs... We did run the Dyno north of 6000 to see what was there.
What do you plan to do with yours?
I kept the factory 70 340 exhaust manifolds and LD340 dual plane intake. Could make more power with Headers, Single Plane Intake and bigger Carb though...
Has Full roller cam, solid lifters and Aluminum eddy heads straight out of the box...

A couple cars up from the bottom of the page...

I've read a moderately built V8 should make a hp number at least 1.25 x displacement.

"I've read a moderately built V8 should make a hp number at least 1.25 x displacement."- that may be a wee bit rich. According to that, a 340 would make 425hp and that's not your moderately built variety performance buildup. I've heard that 1.15% is more common. Driveability comes into the picture, too.

418x1.15=480 Sounds about right to me.
