73 challenger 340 not charging.

Has newer alternator and new ballast resistor and voltage regulator.  One field wire on alt shows 10 volts, other field wire shows 2 volts.  Battery output lug on alternator pegs my gauge at 30 volts. But no voltage to battery..  Any help would be appreciated....    :working:   Seems like same problem I had last year when black wire of battery lug on alternator shorted on the block...   

Now following that black wire thru firewall to behind fuse box.  So far it's intact so looks like it burnt some again inside the car..  Anyone know where that wire goes after it goes thru the firewall?

Is your wiring still stock that these schematics may help ?


Thanks for the diagrams.. Appears my ammeter took a dump, bypassed it and now I'm charging again..  Any source for an ammeter replacement? Or a way to get mine rebuilt?

I have a 70 version if your stuck? ( standard cluster not rally)  Is your a rally dash?

                            Personally I would leave it bypassed and use a volt meter.    :2cents:

 :iagree: forget the ammeter and do the bypass. use a volt meter instead, it is much easier and safe!
