Just found a set on Craigslist.  Dallas/Fort Worth.  Cleaned and painted.  $50.  Seller says he won't ship.  Pick-up only.

They are out there. 

I would try to get one that does not have the EGR...the boss is there on all of them, but some are not drilled.  The boss is just a huge chunk of iron and can be ground down for clearance if needed (mine hit the trans dipstick)

Access to the bolts that mount the valve block sucks.. And I'm sure you know thats gonna need to be adjusted once the car is running..


I was just going back over this thread, thinking about what to do and realized what your comment actually said.

The bolts to the valve block are not blocked at all...although I can see how you could think that.

Here is another pic from the top and you can see access to those bolts is fine.



The cross shaft adjustment, well that is another story...but once that adjustment is made it should not need to be touched for awhile.  I think that a cut down allen wrench will work for that.

The only spot where the manifold is touching is at the very top of the of the steering box....you can see it righ in the middle of this pic.



it is soooooooo close to clearing.

I am so tempted to shave a little off with my die grinder.

You could grind a little clearance in the edge of the steering box  i suppose , grinding a little off the steering box would be preferable to grinding the manifold & it is the edge of the steering box so i cannot see a problem there

hmmm you might be right...of course I just finished a rebuild on the steering box and painted it... but I guess I could shave a bit off of it and touch up the paint.

That spot in the box is pretty thick, so I should be able to get the clearance I need...maybe.

normally the engine will torque away from the that side unless you are doing burnouts in reverse LOL so it  will not take a lot of clearance & yes the box is very  thick there & above the stress area

OK I went out last night and hit the box with a file.  Only took a few mins, but I got it to a point where there is a little bit of clearance.

Hard to tell from the pic, but you can easily slide a piece of paper between the box and manifold.



I don't think I want to go any further on the box.  Given that is where the spanner threads into, I think it could weaken it a bit and do nto want to take any chance.

I know its not enough clearance, so I think I till take Brad's advice and look into angle milling the mating surface.

I'd be concerned about the heat radiating from manifold to steering box.
Have you tried all of the bolts fitting manifold to head?
I would find a machine shop to mill  some of the manifold mating to be sure of surface mating.

Yeah that thought has crossed my mind...even if I angel mill the mating surface, the manifold is going to be very close to the steering box.

I know full well how much rubber O-rings etc. are in the box, so I wonder if any of those could be damaged by the heat???

Mine is close also . I added a cooler just in case.
So when are you bringing up the manifold to angle mill it?  :stirpot: :icon16:
