1970 BARRACUDA CHARGING SYSTEM PROBLEMS PERSIST **HELP**
« on: April 17, 2016 - 02:10:21 PM »
I checked the voltage regulator, cleaned the connectors, confirmed good ground and fired her up. The alternator was putting out 16volt. Took it for a quick spin and radio stopped working, bluetooth etc. So I swapped out the regulator with one from my previous 70 Grand Coupe.......the backing looked good, cleaned the connectors and battled with the (2) nuts under the cowling  :banghead: :swear:.

The alternator was putting out 17.5volts and regulator got hot real fast, so I pulled the plug off and the alternator became quiet, the rpms idled down and alternator was putting out 13.7V. Put the charging system tester on battery and it showed <13V BAD.

I take it the NOS was crap? Can anyone confirm? I will order a new regulator tomorrow. Anything else I might be missing?

Sounds like both are bad , the alt is working obviously if it will put out 17 V so that leaves the reg , it should be putting out 13.7 - 14.4 v if it is regulating it orrectly
