Thanks Andy and Bob.  I was told the "old style" coil I have is not meant for the RTR distributor due to potential high voltage spikes, so the modular style should be here Thursday.  I double checked the wires and firing order and they are all good.  I'm swapping the 4 speed in my buddies shop starting tomorrow and we will check the timing and accel pump then.

was it ever determined if it is a backfire thru carb, or exhaust? 2 entirely different scenarios as CP pointed out.

Quick update - timing was perfect but when I was checking the wires #5 boot was melted through.  I have a new one from Rich at Firecore on the way along with some titanium sleeves.

So I guess the wire was resting on the header/manifold?

I was just about to ask you if it was a backfire or a pop/ping noise? Because this was my first thought, a plug boot/wire arching out. Has happened to me a few times and I keep plug boots in the car with me now.
