You should come down some time.  Lots going on at the shop.  I did purchase a 71 challenger convertible.  It has a 318 in it and it the cleanest 71 on the planet.........I almost feel guilty taking it apart!

Because then you have all the cost, time, and effort of the repairs of the basket case on top of all the cost, time, and effort of the mods.
Nice car and I'm sure it will turn out nice. I am a major fan of resto mods, but I really hate to see clean cars used for that purpose. Really don't understand why some guys don't buy a basket case if they want to change it like that. :2cents:


Exactly as stated above.........as I might have already said I am not a Mopar expert but I have learned quite a bit as a shop owner.  In your garage  you can work for hours on basket cases but as the trustee of customers wallets the metal work can turn into a serious amount of money.  I have been reluctant to accept the fact it takes so long but it does.  The parts for these cars are not cheap so buying a car in this condition is money saved.  A $20,000 basket cast can turn into $40K real quick just to get partially to the point of this car.  the convertible top on this car looks new.......I am not sure what that is worth but I am sure a bundle not having to restore or buy a new frame.  So yes no matter what I do I like to start off with the best car possible.

Now that I have the car I am temporarily in a indecisive position on the motor.  Now that I have talked my customer  into a new Hemi and 4L80 transmission I still have a 440 in my mind with fuel injection.  Its less labor and with the fuel injection could be cool.........F&B 6 pack fuel injection.......it might be cool.  I would still put a 4L80 in it.  Darn, decisions decisions.  I have the Hotchkis Suspension on its way.


Its a good paint job but a second paint job on the car so we have taken it down to bare metal and bringing it back.

As an update, I just purchased my 2nd setup; this one will be for my 440 Challenger. This one will be in use before the first one I bought. All in, this is a $6K-$6500 effort depending on how you want to plumb it and what you may already have.

Hey guys hope all is well out there in Mopar land!  Bodywork has been ongoing and finally ready for paint here in the next few weeks.  The only piece of sheetmetal I replaced was the hood as there was about 1" of bondo in the middle of it.  I did pick up the Ring Bros billet aluminum hinges which are pretty sweet.  I went round and round with new hemi's and other motors and finally decided the 440 was the absolute final decision on the motor.  A few weeks ago I found a real nice 1971 440 block.  I decided to go with a new gm 4L80 transmission.  Nothing like cutting the bell housing off a new transmission!!!  Here are some pictures....

Very nice! Is there/will there be any structural strengthen (sub frame connectors, etc)? I like that trans mod, looks pretty cool.

Sheldon, I figured I could get by with doing a gm transmission.  I was afraid on doing the LS because I figure I might get a good ole fashion Mopar butt whippin with that mod!!!!  i think the 440 is best!!

I think the Hotchkiss system is very nice and will perform well for you.

If you are going to crank out any serious torque out of that 440 I would definitely recommend sub-frame connectors. The inner fender brace will help as well and can be found at USCartool.
