I am replacing the compressor (going back with the original style RV2 rebuilt 4 Seasons from O'Reilly), dryer, expansion valve and will flush all the other components completely. I had already converted the system to 134a years ago but the compressor has developed many leaks. O'Reilly shows to use PAG 46 but does not say how much and I can not find oil system capacity any where. The only clue I found was in a 1971 service manual that mentions that when new (seems to mean when the car is new) the compressors are filled with 10 to 12 oz of oil which is distributed thru the rest of the system leaving 6 to 8 ounces in the compressor.

Can someone confirm 46 wt is correct and how much oil the system takes and should I put it all in the compressor or split it up between the compressor and other components?

  The factory service manual has an illistration of how to make a dipstik for your RV2 compressor, A dry compressor will take about 6 to 8 oz. I used R12 & mineral compressor oil in mine. Maybe 3 to 4 extra oz if your entire system is completely dry. I don't know what oil for R134 probably some kind of synthetic.

First the type of oil.... R12 used mineral oil...  R134 doesn't work well with mineral oil the preferred oil is PAG 46 except if there is any residue mineral oil it will mix with the PAG oil & create a nasty gray sludge that doesn't lubricate anything.... So the lubrication engineers came up with something called Ester oil... It's compatible with R134 & mineral oil so it's generally the safest lubricant in a converted system... If your 100% confident you'll get every drop of mineral oil flushed out PAG 46 is a better lube..  Butttt....

As far as how much & where... If your flushing & replacing components you need the full 12 oz with a few oz in the dryer, evaporator & condenser & the rest in the compressor...

Buy the right O rings...  Go to Home depot & but a gallon of Denatured Alcohol, It' whats recommender as an alternative by MACS which is one of the licensing agencies....Then go to Autozone & borrow the flushing tool.....
