Slalom racing at Good Guys
« on: May 20, 2016 - 12:17:49 AM »
A couple weeks ago I was at a good guys car show and track event. There were only three Mopars at the track. a Challenger with the paint stripped off, a really out-there 70' Cuda. The Cuda had a turbocharged Cummings diesel that evidently made enough torque to pull a train. I did not to get to see it or the no-paint Challenger run.
However the third car was a hoot! It was a lime green 69' Satellite convertible. It looked stock and in so-so condition. But underneath, s&$t- howdy! Seriously modified suspension with huge tires and wheels. Never saw under the hood and was not able to talk to the two guys driving it. On the course it was really fast. Two guys with cowboy hats sitting on a vinyl bench seat with evidently nothing more than lap belts. This car was easily pulling over 1G and both guys had their arms outside of the car hugging the doors for all they were worth. The best they could do was stay on their side of the seat. It was a great time watching these guys.

I'd love to know what suspension they were running.  There's different levels of kits from several suspension vendors and I've checked out them all.  Totally removing the stock suspension for coil-overs, etc. is not for me, I've got a new Mustang for that, but maxxing out the original configuration is definitely OK, such as the kits from Hotchkis and Firmfeel.  One  of these days I'm going to get out to one of the larger shows and hopefully see first hand which options work best on the autocross & track day fun.

That's our favorite part of good guys. Some people are serious and others are just goofing off and having fun. I remember one time and I don't remember what type of car it was, but it was huge, a big ol boat. They had 6 people it and that thing looked it handled like it had marshmallow suspension. I'll tell ya that guy was a pro everyone stopped and watched this car, somehow he could float that thing around the corners was amazing to watch.  :2thumbs:

He's posted over at protouring.com a few times. He has the full Hotchkis TVS system, Firm Feel K frame and steering box, Willwood brakes, and 18" wheels. Nothing too exotic. And Yes, it still has a bench seat in it.
