Raining inside, Windshield leaking, clip mounting?

Hey guys,

I got the -  i guess common - problem, that i get wet inside when it is raining It is dripping from the inside trim, which I removed.


There are two spots like this one, but I couldn't find any spots on the headliner or roof skin.


So far, so good, I found out how to remove the windshield mouldings, was easier than I thought, even with a self-made tool. I removed all of the old, crumble, dusty sealing material... or I don't know what it exactly was between glass and roof edge.


Ok a bit rust in there, but not THAT bad. Sprayed the area with water and found a leak between glass and body.


This brings me actually to my questions... I couldn't find out how the Clips are mounted and if there is a hole or screw through the Roof where it could leak as well? Has this something to do with it? Looks like this little something is going through the roof where the clip is.


And I'm uncertain how to repair this and with which materials? I could use some kind of "body sealant" to fill the gap between glass and body (actually vinyl top). But this stuff is horrible to remove once for example windshield or top has to be changed. And i think it might be too stiff for the Clips to be released or to fill a leak behind the Clip if there is one. Or silicone which would be more flexible and easier to remove?

The trim clips are Mounted to little metal cleats welded on at the factory, or the are screwed in (if the studs broke off or a panel was replaced). 

You should really pull the glass and find out why it is leaking,  if you seal the  hole you could  actually cause a pooling area to start rot , if you don't have rot already. I.e where your leak is channeling from..

Hopefully it's just a failing windshield seal..   Sometimes the vinyl sneaks under the  seal at install and makes a wick for water entry...


I don't recommend below but.......

I have seen small leaks sealed with a syringe  ( they sell them on Amazon , they are for science experiments , blunt tip syringe).  You suck up 3m super black weatherstrip adhesive and  inject it to where you think is coming from.

Hey lulurocks,

I'm quite sure it is the sealant between glass and body, at least you see drops there. Next thing would be clarifying if the clips are probably screwed in where it could leak as well.

Cutting out the windshield? Whooow... better not! I'm afraid that it breaks and getting new ones here is "slighty" more expensive than you can get them locally for sure. And the rear window has the same problem, but one after the other.

Question is... what belongs in the 5-10mm gap between glass and roof edge? There was some kind of black sealant mass in there, but I'm not sure wheter it has to be filled in again or the gap stays empty.

There is not anything put in that gap from the factory , from what ive ever seen , others please chime in. Ive only disassembled a few ebodys .

The glass sits atop a  tar rope (butyl)type seal and has that open edge near the clips as you have .

Gettin a window out in one peice is a bear ... I agree.. I would do anything to not take it out.

I don't know the production date of the glass right now... but I suppose it has been taken out or has been replaced as the "glue" or seal is uneven... you know what I mean? Sort of from a hand-press. That may be the reason why the vinyl tops edge was covered with this black mass...

Ok, I take out the remains of sealant from the gap, give the metal an anti rust treatment and use a tiny bit of sealant just at the bottom of the glass to the metal to fill up the hole and to smoothen the "rinse" for the water that will get under the moulding anyway. I don't drive it in rain regularly if I can avoid it, so I don't really bother about further rust once it is cleaned. But if it happens I really would like to get out without pants that look like I peed myself
