Broken fan shroud
« on: July 12, 2016 - 05:13:32 AM »
Guys, does anyone know what the new fan shrouds are made from? I think it's a repop one, made of like a fibre reinforced black plastic, I have broken it and would like to use a good hi grade loctite product to glue it back togeather so as I can hopefully not see the break, it's a clean break no chips missing, I can't believe I broke it but that's my luck!

I bought an original one that was cracked. I epoxied it 5 years ago with no problems.

Thanks guys, I have some pretty good epoxy at work we use on gun systems, i'll glue the crack then reinforce the back with some fibreglass sheeting,

Most likely it is a long fiber reinforced nylon. If so, then as others have stated use an epoxy for a good mechanical bond. Nylon doesn't re-melt like ABS material can with its glue. Just note it will still be more prone to cracking in same area because the strengthening fibers now have a split seam.

You could however do a cheap test to see if it is ABS. Get some ABS glue (sprinkler pipe glue) and dab some on your shroud to see if it will melt its surface. If it does use that for your fix. Now you will have the mechanical bond. It comes in black also.

Thanks Mike,
yeah I'm pissed with myself for breaking it, it made it all the way out here then I broke it, put it behind the front seat of my daily driver, forgot it was there ran the seat back and bang  :swear:. thats my concern it will always be weaker on the break, I dont want to show any repair on the outside but I will glue the break line, then on the back side rough it up and lay some kevlar matting I have found on there with the 3M Scotch-weld epoxy. Its the best I can come up with, it does look like a nylon product over an ABS for sure.
