Can only break it once
« on: July 14, 2016 - 10:18:34 PM »
My ac at the house stopped working 5 days ago and the heat index here in Houston has been close to 110 degrees outside with 85 degrees inside.
AC company use at work calls back after 2 days and says we dont wrk on residential.
Ok, time to try to fix myself as funds are low, never pulled an ac unit apart before.
Watched a few youtube videos , bought a couple of capacitors and wired it all back in, I now have ac and saved Im sure a few hundred.

This all relates to cars as such that due to there are a lot of mechanic aspects Ive been afraid to work on due to "never" having done them, if its broke, can I really break it more, or maybe I just fix it and learn something new.
Watchin on here how everyone is diving into new aspects of rebuild, remodel, repair everything is a great motivator also.

I always tell myself, "if it's not broken in half, I can probably fix it"  :roflsmiley:

Google and YouTube are definitely your friends. I always say if you're having a problem, someone else has already had that problem.

My ac broke last week too,  compressor run capacitor tests bad.  I couldn't find one local on the shelf have one in transit from China from ebay.  Hot as heck here too.  Thankfully, I have window unit picking up the slack.

My ac broke last week too,  compressor run capacitor tests bad.  I couldn't find one local on the shelf have one in transit from China from ebay.  Hot as heck here too.  Thankfully, I have window unit picking up the slack.

My capacitors were both mounted horizontal , I think some are oil filled, they should be mounted vertical, may have contributed to the failure.
All I had were fans, but realized 85 degrees was not nice but bearable when the outside is 25 degrees hotter.
There is also the booster kick start capacitor and relay on mine that helps the compressor life.
AC unit is 18 years old, cools well. As my brother says about my vehicles , why dont you get something made in this century.

My AC went out last year and it was the outside contactor. Be aware of those too.

Had a hard shell beetle get inside the AC and the contactor couldn't close. Doesn't hurt to unplug or turn off, then just take a look, but be careful of capacitors.

Same mentality here about it already being broken.
I have an 02 Dakota R/T and it has the usual rotted of clear coat issue. Going to soon set up and use it as my practice vehicle.  Paint is already "broken" so I cannot screw it up any more.
