Epoxy Primer Scratching
« on: July 13, 2016 - 07:36:42 PM »
Shot a couple areas with SPI Epoxy and Activator. 50/50 mix with their primer and hardener. Appx 2 weeks ago.

Induce time 30 minutes plus, 30 minutes+ between coats, 2 coats. Temperature 70+, outside of the overnight which may have gotten down to 60ish appx 12 hours after shooting.

I ran my nail across it and noticed that I could scuff the surface. I didn't appear to be able to go down to bare metal or deeply gouge it, but thought it was weird I could scuff the surface with my nail and have a distinct line.

Is this normal or is this a sign something went wrong?

Thanks

50/50 is a pretty high percentage. Is that the package spec? How old is the product? If all else fails, call or email the producer's tech department. Good luck.

1:1 is what the tech sheet called for.
I've had the product in my hands for a couple of months, appeared mfg date was this year. But I can't recall exactly.

Yeah that is the one. I followed that instruction to the T. I am thinking about calling the manufacturer just to see, but I figured I would check here to see if I am worrying about something that isn't a problem first.

Epoxy, by it's nature, shouldn't be soft. I'd give it a couple of days and if it doesn't harden, then I'd call the tech department. Ka-ka occurs.

Yeah that is what I thought. Been a couple of weeks already, but I'll go ahead and call in and see.

The owner of SPI is usually the guy that answer the tech. calls over there or at least use to be. He will answer any questions you have and is very knowledgeable about all things coating related.
