Questions about replacing alternator brushes

Is it possible to replace the brushes without removing the alternator?

Maybe  they are easy to remove , just make Sure you do not lose the isolating washers

if you remove the alternator...  you can change the brushes much easier . Also I would open the alternator and
use a piece of fine sanding paper  to "clean " the copper surface of the anchor  ( where the brushes contact the anchor )  brings your voltage output up a little
