Starter install problem!
« on: August 20, 2016 - 04:30:24 PM »
440 in our '71 Cuda - just dropped it in today! We have a high torque mini starter and it won't install properly because of a black plastic piece. Anyone else install this starter on their 440 and if so, how? It goes on the top stud okay but the lower bolt won't line up because of this black piece. Suggestions???? Here are pics:

I used a starter that looked similar. The part that is hitting the engine block can be removed with 2 bolts, assuming is the same unit. The starter wires hook to what is still attached to the starter.

It looks like you're right! Why is that extended like that? So we can remove that and hook our wires up to the remaining bolts? Here's pics:

Yes, You can remove that extension if you have it it's just to allow a different place  to attach the wires .

Glad to see the question was asked.  I was thinking of getting the same type starter.  So you remove the whole black plastic extension from the nuts that is attached to what looks like where the solenoid is located?  In essence you are removing both of those longer posts in the black plastic extension?

Yes the extender has to be removed to clear , everything works exactly the same when bolted to the lower studs

Make sure the starter mounts squarely on the trans. Some blocks have extra material around the starter that needs to be ground off. My 360 block needed clearancing for that starter to fit. Double check it.
