perform a 360cui
« on: August 28, 2016 - 11:04:22 AM »
Hi

I have a 360cui Engine from 1972.
How much Performance can I get from this Engine
and which Parts I need ?

At time I have a Holley Double Pump 4bbl carb, a weiand dual plane intakte manifold,
a mild Comp Cam. The Engine Block and Cylinderheads are Stock.
Also a MSD Street Fire Box, a MSD Blaster SS Coil,
Stock Distributor, 8,5 MSD Superconductor sparke wires.

I want morgen Horsepower and Torque but I ask me,
how much Performance could I get from my engine
when I change the Cylinderheads with the inside Parts,
take a better Carb, and Made the Ignition to a full
high performance Ignition System.

With which Parts I can get the best and most Performance
with quality ?

All 360s are poor performers stock , no were built with good compression & this is the root of the problem , Changing all of the easy parts , heads cam intake carb header etc will not get you far .
To make it worse there is no good drop in piston replacement , massive oversight by the aftermarket IMO .
1st step IMO you need to stroke it , drop in a new crank rods & pistons take it to 408 CI & you have a great engine .
Now the sky is the limit , good heads , intake , carb , exhaust & cam  you will have a very strong engine .
If you want to go further replace the block with an R3 & bolt on W8 or W9 heads now you have a small block capable of 700+ hp .
The parts you have may or may not work Holley makes 100s of different carbs some good some great some excellent & some not so good
Not sure which intake you have but the best performers are the Eddy AirGap / RPM or Ld340 or even stock  !
The Comp Cam is probably not the best choice as they are really not designed for Mopars & in your case you need something with wide lobe separation 112-114* to build any cylinder pressure with the 8:1 compression you have .

 OK
Problem 1 is compression anything you do without fixing that is a compromise so build a stroker make sure you plan which heads you will use , you need closed chamber heads & you want heart shaped chamber [W2 are awsome for this] , you want to be around 10:1 with Iron heads or 11:1 with alum plan to use Comtic gaskets with alum heads these are available in different thickness to control compression but ultimatly you must have .040-.060 max between the piston & head so you will have quench .040 is better you may have to get dished pistons under the spark plug to get the rigth quench & compression but this will pay huge dividends . Then you can plan the rest based from airflow & RPM requirements so you have the right cam intake carb headers all to match with the airflow .
 I have a W2 360 make 500+ Hp using a 500 cfm 2bbl carb !

Throw some turbos on it. Compression issue solved.
Removing the warning labels one at a time.
Nature will take care of the rest.

Thx for reply

That Compression will be a Problem I hab read and people in the
german mopar forum Talk about that.

Alu Cylinderheads are interesting me.
What about the Indy X-Heads for 360cui engines ?
Which Alu Cylinderheads you could recommend ?
Which Cam, hydraulic Roller or ?
What about Quick Fuel Black Diamond Carb ?

When you say that a 408 Stroker could get 700+ HP
you mean SAE Horsepower or DIN Horsepower ?
This Power of 700+ HP on the rear wheels or on the
Transmission flange ?
Which so much Power you have to perform the Transmission,
the rear axle and the brakes too...

A Stroker are not my first choice. I was hoping with other
Cylinderheads and better Parts inside, also high performance
the Ignition, the Carb and fix the compression problems,
could it be able to build a good 360cui performance engine
but that's not possible on this way, or ?

I am talking Groos HP #s , I prefer to use RWHP but telling people they will only get 275 hp when the engine was orginally designed with more gets difficult everyone wants the high #s
AS I clearly explained without changing pistons everything else is a compromise , if you are changing pistons the cost to do a stroker is virtually the same as rebuilding the stock parts so why not do the stroker , best value for the $$
You have given me nothing to work with , what so you want the engine to do what is the purpose / usage , what rpm , highway or city or race , budget , trans type , gearing ?
Everything affects everything else I could choose from  10 different heads , 200 cams ,10 intakes etc
If I was building a small block no question I would do a R3 block with W8 or W9 heads what else would come close , it would take me years to pay for it though

need more info?

what trans?

what gear ratio?

do you want a mild, moderate, or nasty idle?

lite to lite drag car or freeway flier or inbetween?

do you want to roast the tires?

HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU HAVE?

You can make a 360 haul ass if you ave enough money.

cylinder heads range from around $800.00 each to $2000.00 eeach

https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/cylinder-heads/make/dodge/engine-size/5-9l-360/engine-family/mopar-small-block-la

pistons are easy, just get custom 4032 material ones from race tech for only $575.00 . they can mirror the combustion chamber if you want.

http://racetecpistons.com/

your quench should be between .043 and .034" with closer to .034" being better.

run around 10.5 compression

My 360 cui engine,  build 1972, is Stock, only the mild Comp Cam are perform inside the engine.
It have a Weiand dual plane intakte manifold
Holley 650 cfm Double Pump Carb
3,55 sure grip rear axle
Stock 727 Transmission with Stock Converter
MSD Blaster SS Coil
MSD Street Fire Ignition Box
Stock Distributor where be dead now and have to change

This are some Info about my engine.

Also need to know the intended use for the car, an engine built for in town, race, or highway could make a huge difference in parts choices.

Ok, then I will go for a Street / Strip Highway engine

Will it be realistic or will it be able to build this engine with 500 HP
without building a Stroker or did it only function with the Stroker way ?
