8 3/4" 3rd Member swap...first timer..
« on: October 20, 2005 - 10:14:55 AM »
Hi there, ill be swapping out my 2.76open for a 3.91grip here in a little bit. Never done this before, never torn into a rear. This car is my daily driver so ill have to take one of my days off work to do this.

I have the factory bearings in there, and i need to get the basics on swapping this thing out. and i have no idea how to adjust the endplay of the axles...

anythin will help!

Thanks
-Goody

undo the wheels , remove the brake drums
there are 5 nuts on each side behind the axle flange that retain the axle remove these nuts & pull the axle out
undo the 10 nuts on the center carrier , I use a jack to break the seal & lift out the gear set ,
clean the housing & install a new gasket, FelPro has them
& reverse the procedure
if you are using a Clutch type sure grip make sure the Buttons are in place , if not that are avaiable new from Mopar
once you have it back together there is a threaded collar on the right axle & a lock tab that was removed with the 5 bolts tighten or loosen the adjuster until you just feel a slight amout of end play , it should be .008 - .018 make sure you hit the end of the axle hard to push the other axle all the way into the left axle brg & check the play again

Goody, if you have any problems, Mike in Naperville should be able to help you out.  I was there when we pulled apart his 8 3/4" for the first time.

Endplay is about the thickness of a dime.
