Stock 71 Cuda Exhaust Muffler Swap Out Questions
« on: October 14, 2016 - 04:11:17 PM »
I have a restored 1971 Cuda 340.  It has a reproduction factory exhaust system.   There a 2 sets of mufflers on it, which makes the car super quiet.   I want to get a stronger sound out of,  without changing too much that cant be put back later.   I am keeping the stock manifolds,  but I am considering swapping out the first set of mufflers with Flowmaster 44 series, which advertise strong sound and the sizing is nearly the same as stock.
Not sure how it will sound with keeping the rear sets of round mufflers.   Has anyone done this before?  Or do most people just eliminate the rear set of mufflers.   I'm just not sure if keeping the second set of round mufflers near the tailpipes are going to pretty much kill the sound of the flowmasters.

Any thoughts would be appreciated,  including property terminology of the two sets of mufflers so I don't sound like a  :newbie:

   Here some pics.

I will suggest removing the set under the rear seat with a set of straight pipes and see how you like the sound. I did this on my 340 Challenger with h-pipe and it sounded much better with just the two on the rear.

The round mufflers right ahead of the exhaust tips are the mufflers. The units under the rear seats are resonators. Back in the day we always replaced the resonators with straight pipe and that seemed to work okay.
