Upper rear shock bolt removal.
« on: September 19, 2016 - 02:56:02 PM »
I was curious if there's a trick to getting this bolt out or am I over thinking this? If I'm in the trunk loosening the nut from the access hole, won't the bolt spin unless some else is under the car holding the bolt? I was hoping this was a one person job.

Put a pair of vise grips on the bolt head from the bottom, then loosen the nut.

I figured that was going to be the answer. I was only under the car for a couple minutes and it seemed real tight in that area. If a pair of vise grips will fit up in there I'll give that a shot.

I use a 1/2 impact gun with a swivel and  a short 3/4 socket on the bolt, and a 3/4 wrench on the nut, both from the bottom. :2cents:

So you can reach them both from the bottom? Damn! I'll have to crawl back under there and feel around. It's really tight with dual exhaust and rear sway bar all fighting for the same place. I'll check it out tomorrow. Thank you guys.

Two wrenches from underneath will not work with stock exhaust and heat deflectors. You can't get your hand in to even touch the nut on the drivers side upper shock bolt. I tried and tried and was never able touch it. I was able to touch the passenger side nut, but just barely. This is a 73' Cuda by the way with un-touched factory original dual exhaust and rear sway bar. I ended up using vise grips on the bolts from under the car and loosing the nuts from the access holes inside the trunk. Spraying the nuts with lube helped greatly. Happy I'm done!

It doesn't take that long to pull the heatshields out, then the job isn't that bad. Other than that I have just stuck a wrench through from the top and used wood to hold it then go underneath and loosen the bolt. You have to stop before spinning it all the way off though, you go up top again for that so you don't lose everything.
On thinking about it, you should be able to hold the front wrench somehow along the crossmember and loosen from the top,
