Dash lights Don't Work
« on: October 05, 2016 - 06:05:24 PM »
Sorry, I posted this question before but I couldn't attach a photo. On my 73 challenger the dash lights don't work. I used a test light and I have power to both sides of the fuse. When I turn the dimmer the test light dims and gets bright on both sides of the fuse. I found a connector that is melted. I can't find the wire that goes to the orange wires for the dash lights. If I put 12 volts to the orange wires, I get dash lights. Does anyone know what wires go to the orange wires. Can I run a wire from the fuse box to this connector. Thanks

The brownish wire from the dimmer goes to fuse block bank 5 . Then it turns into an orange after the fuse . That orange wire runs to the bottom of colum connector ..  It's doubled up at that connector check there for burn or bad connector .

See pic  connector is at base of colum .

So from the column connector, the orange wires go to the connector I have?  Can I run a wire from the fuse box to the connectors I have pictured?

Well  I. Just realized the. Connector you pictured is the main harness side of the  colum connector someone cut it in half or it burnt in half.... So

From the fuse 5  the orange wires go :

-The the  colum connector , doubled up as u see In your pic .
- then it runs up to behind the radio where it turns into a multi tap female bayonet connector, this is where the dash lights, ashtray, shifter indicator in a console car , plug into .

So    See if you have power at the doubled up orange  in the pic you posted with lights on .

If no... U need to get a wire from bank 5 fuse to the orange wire that continues on to Behind  the radio.

If yes ... move to the connector behind the radio  and. Check for power.

If you find that the wire from the fuse block to the colum connector is bad I would run from the fuse to behind the radio and  put the female bayonet connector on my new orange dimmed wire.  Make sure u cut out or cap  the old wiring to make it safe .
