How strong is a stock 727 trans?

 :cooldancing:How much torque can a stock 727 take without exploding? This is street tires and street use. I want to fry the tires on occasion and not worry too much about spilling the guts on the road.

How much torque do you have would be the question?  These are stout transmissions and its not going to explode on you unlesss you downshift to first or shock first gear with a valve body that doesn't apply 1st band. You don't have that if it's stock...

With clean fluid and good adjustments it'll probably be fine. If you want to throw some good parts at it to make sure I have a lot of suggestions I can give you. I always start with a deep pan and big external cooler.

The big problem shows up at the drag strip while using sticky tires. If you don't have a valve body that applies the band in 1st, there is a possibility of drum explosion IF the sprag fails. A billet drum is expensive but needed if you are going to be at the track with sticky tires. Your standard high performance 727 rebuild with Trans-Go shift kit will last a long time on the street.

Thanks for your input. Right now the trans is fresh and stock. The 383 is stock right now but won't stay that way. I'm thinking about 500tq after displacement increase. I am not familiar with modifying these and am interested in the band being used in first.
My first car was a 66' New Yorker with a 440 that was beat up and drank oil. I did stupid things in the persuit of doing one wheel burn outs. I finally broke the trans by revving the engine in neutral then dropping it into first. After a couple of those stupid stunts the trans never worked well in first but by manually shifting from first to drive it lasted until I got rid of it. This is why some 16 year olds should not drive.

I can only attest to my 727, but I've had the pleasure of doing a 2 minute burnout up and down a track. My Cuda usually has rubber melted to the fender from multiple 1st and second gear burns getting onto the highway. My trans (knock on wood) seems to be fine.  Now that is only with 308 max TQ to the rear wheels. So I think I can beat on it all day with those numbers. Now with that said. My car is currently broken down because of a 15 cent stud that fell into the carb from the air cleaner. But up until then, the trans was great, and is waiting to be back on the road. Happy driving

they are tough stock  , built properly with better parts 800 ft lbs should be no issue
