Good SRT8 Donor car for 3rd gen hemi swap.
« on: June 27, 2017 - 07:08:23 PM »
I'm thinking about buying a whole car for the motor, transmission and nice SRT8 leather seats.   Up here in Canada, a new 6.4L crate engine is right around 10k.  Then I would need all accessories, transmission etc.  There are lots of used 6.1L  cars ( chargers and 300's) in the 2006 - 2007 range that are really low km for the year that I could probably get for around 12000.  They all seem to have a 5 speed auto behind them.  Are these years of 6.1 hemis and transmissions any good?  Are the 6.1 hemis compatible with a supercharger upgrade?  Or is it a good idea to search for a motor and transmission from the auto wreckers.  I'm not opposed to buying a new crate engine either.  Or dumping a comparable amount of money into my 340.  Still wide open on all options for a motor for my car.  For whatever reason, I'm not to interested in a big block.  Although a 426 hemi would be cool.

I saw a feature might have been from SEMA they were showing 6.4 crate engines that were plug and play type kits? Everything needed to install a new crate engine in an older car. That would make the installation pretty easy.

Hmmmm.   Maybe I will have to do more research on the 6.4 crate engine.  I assumed it would not come with any pullies or accessories.

All depends what you want, simple and quick turn around? Redoing your 340 or a stroker motor could be the best bang for your buck. :dunno: New crate motors are nice and theres a harness that is stand alone now available, but I'm sure there's a lot of miscellaneous stuff needed like fuel pump and possibly a new tank to support a new hemi. I haven't done a modern swap so I just don't know. Best to do some more research and decide what you want to end up with.

The late hemi swaps sound cool, but the learning curve is steep and the costs, as mentioned, are too. For my $ it'd be the stroker 340 all day, but it's your car and your call.

I'm leaning back towards a stroking my 340.  My inability to make a decision is killing me!

I don't think a donor car is the best way to go, there is not as much as you think usable from it.

It depends on what you want to do. It can be done easy for a hearty amount of money. Or a little more challenging to keep it on a tighter budget.

Following along, I'm taking baby steps.
I upgraded my 340 with the Spectra fuel tank with in tank electric pump in preparation.
I also added the FiTech throttle body.  The car runs absolutely great and I love the improved hot and cold starts.
I'd like to eventually drop in a Gen3 Hemi to get the improved drive ability and gas mileage.
Would like to have a car I could drive every day anywhere.  The old 340, even with the 518 OD only gets 13mpg.
