Heater question

I just replaced my thermostat with a 190 degree and still no heat. Question which is the inlet hose  to the heater, the small one or the large one? Both hoses feel much cooler than the upper rad hose does. Maybe an air lock or an obstruction?

Any chance it's an A/C car with a water valve turned off?
Or some folks have added a shutoff inline to non-a/c models to keep the heat out of the cabin.

If the heater hoses are cold, you probably have an air block that is not allowing coolant to flow through them; not real uncommon. You can try and fix this by breaking one of them loose (on either end) and then start the car until coolant flows out the hose. If there is a temp control valve in your system (would be on the passenger inner fender and should have a cable running to it from the dash); it would need to be in the open position.

I should have mentioned it was a non a/c so no water valve. I took both hoses off at the engine and flushed  the heater core out backwards, got a lot of junk out, used water and compressed air. I reconnected everything and it is better but still just warm air, not hot. Maybe a partial plugged heater core?

Update. I disconnected the discharge hose where it connects to the engine and with the engine running I only get about a 1/4 flow out of the hose. Is that all it is suppose to put out or do I have a partial blocked heater core?

Temp is regulated by a flap that allows outside air in or not ...Make sure it's closing for max heat..

If your having to pull the heater core it would be an ideal time to recondition the box

I'm not getting much warm air with the car not moving. I am going to try one last ditch effort before replacing the heater core. I got some rad flush and am going to mix it up in a bucket then disconnect the heater hoses from the engine and connect one of the hose ends to my small sump pump and put the other hose end in the bucket and recirculate the rad cleaner through the heater core only. What do you think?

I don't mind buying the heater core I just hate to install it.

That might work depending on what is in the core. It could also make your core start leaking into the passenger compartment if what you are removing is corrosion. Not saying you shouldn't try it, just be aware what could happen. I would highly recommend putting some plastic down on the floor of the pass side and make sure it is tucked up under the heater box just in case.

Good luck.

For the record, the heater box isn't that hard to remove if you take out the glove box, passenger seat and console if you have one.
