Soo.... Let's say you had 2 thousand to spend and ...
« on: November 28, 2016 - 12:38:59 AM »
I've got 2K burning a hole in my pocket - Here is my situation:

I'm running an automatic trans - 383 engine.   I have a Holley 3310 that runs a bit rich.  Standard cast manifolds with a holley single plane intake.   Cam is 262intake/270exhaust  462lift 110LSA.   Have a Summit billet dizzy.   Aluminum water pump housing and Vintage Air system...  Mechanically - good but the engine leaks oil and power steering fluid.  Car is in need of 5K of body work at least in front to align 1/4's with grille - Handling sucks as everything the car is on a standard suspension.

Cabin is loud and hot.  I have either an exhaust leak or something like that... have a bit of a droning.

I'm thinking of going for the FiTech 30001 Kit and a fuel command center.  Also- I'm thinking of a new dizzy that can be controlled by the EFI.

What would you do?

Most of the issues you describe will not be fixed with a FiTech system, but it is your money so go buy something you think you would enjoy!

Jet and adjust the carb a bit and fix those oil leaks and exhaust leak, that's a killer. Make sure the frontend and brake parts are in good condition and buy some new shocks if it needs them. Then a big pair of sway bars. Then some dynamat on the floor.
It sounds to me like there are a bunch of mechanical loose ends on the car and spending a bunch of money on a new item and maybe not installing it with 100% care won't fix any ills. For example, the O2 sensor won't read the AF ratio correctly if that exhaust leak is ahead of it, which it most likely is.

Yep, not much sense to make the car's engine run a bit better when you're saying that it may not go or whoa properly. Spend some of the 2G's at a reputable tuning shop and fix the carb/exhaust problems and repair/replace the frt suspension/brakes. Then, as mentioned, pull the carpet and put in some matting and/or heat reflecting materials  and make your car much more user friendly and enjoyable to drive, period. Having said all that, if you've got a terminal woody for a new FI toy, you're probably gonna do it anyways- but you did ask.

Ya'll are right... I need to get to a shop that has a lot more experience with the carb than I do... get somebody with a lift to hunt down the leak and get ready to drive more comfortably.   I'll also get on to the front rotor and pad upgrade... Maybe even hook up some front suspension help as mentioned above too.  This thing is like turning a plow for sure haha.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND TIME.

I know it isn't glamorous but trust me if you get everything working as it should be you will start enjoying the car a lot more.

I think you're making a good call with your car. As for the handling, I popped for the Firm Feel Stage 3 rebuild of my box and it feels and drives very similar to a new car. There's nothing fancy in my front end- all stock Moog parts and bushings, but I did go for drilled and slotted rotors in a stock size. I used the Mopar T-bars and they're around .096" or so with the stock front and rear sway bars and if you've got some dough left, pop for the Bilstein shocks. Good luck!

If it was me, I'd go after the leaks. Then the insulation inside the car, then the suspension. Depending on what you do and how much you do yourself, 2k will go a long way.

If you get the car dependable and comfortable you will want to drive it more.

That's right. And if you're driving it more then you'll want to get it looking a little better and that's another 2K. And then you'll say well that looks good so I should do this and that's another 2k. And then you'll say I've done that much I may as well finish it and that's another..................Well, you know.

Take care of what's REQUIRED to get from point A to point B. The rest is icing on the cake.  A car that sounds or looks good gets laughed even more than a junker when its broken down on the highway. :D

Stop the leaks, do a tune up, fix the suspension, THEN make hp.
