Under the wire!
« on: December 10, 2016 - 05:27:31 PM »
It's always a sad time for me in fall here northwest of Chicago, as I have to winterize and put away my Challenger fleet until spring.
Last one to be put to bed every year is my '09 R/T Classic.  You never know about the weather here in December, sometimes it is horrible, bitter cold and snowing every day.  Other years like the last 2, it's been fairly nice.  So I've drove the '09 some until around Xmas in recent years.
I guess I was a bit optimistic this year, as last Sunday we got about 8" of wet crappy snow! Then it got real cold.
Watching the forecasts all week they were talking about chances for another big snow this weekend followed by another even colder arctic cold blast.
So the car is sitting in the garage needing a crankcase full of fresh Mobil 1 and a dollop of Seafoam and a top off of the fuel tank, to be ready for it's winter nap, and no idea when the weather will be dry and warm enough to do those chores.
It was dry but in the low 20s today with the snow not forecast to start until later in the afternoon. I had no desire to be outside changing oil in the cold, or at least sunny so it would feel warmer, but did it anyway!  Then I put some Seafoam in the tank and went to the Shell station for gas.
As I got back home in the driveway, I noticed some snow flurries on the windshield. Pulled in the garage and did a few odds and ends in the garage, headed outside and it's starting to snow!
In by the bell, barely, but made it!  :cooldancing:
Now if my fingers will warm up...
Monday I'll call State Farm and suspend all but my comprehensive insurance, and then I will get a calendar out and start marking the days off until spring... I hate winter!!  :eek4:

I don't envy your weather.

I really like Chicago though.
Been there the last 2 years on business.

Great city.   :2thumbs:

I stayed at the Loew's hotel and walked down aways to a Pavilion where there was Rock band playing.
Afterwards, there was a great fireworks show.

Back to the weather...

Raining alot in Nor Cal lately.
Still get to drive my Cuda year round for the most part. When it's dry and not too cold.

If that is your vintage Challengers you are referring to, if nothing else, you can buy a Stabil Product called "360" and add some to your fuel tanks without need to top them off.
Stabil 360 is said to emit a gas or something that puts a coating of protectent on the inside surfaces of the fuel tank to protect from corrosion from any water that condensates in a less than full fuel tank when it sits over the winter.
A friend of mine who has a '71 Challenger doesn't bother filling his gas tank before winter now since he started using 360.
I'm still filling all my tanks, even though I am putting 360 in my vintage Challengers.  I am just using Seafoam in the '09.
I'm not even sure if the '09 has a steel tank, or if it is plastic?  I should crawl under it and check sometime!
I don't like letting my car sit over the winter with old oil in the engine.  So it may sound like a minor thing to some people, but changing the oil in the '09 was real important to me, and I was really worried I'd missed the boat this year with it shaping up to be a nasty December!  So I was a real relief to me I was able to get this done yesterday before the latest snow hit.  We have about 6" of snow on the ground now since it started yesterday, and another 2 inches forecast by the time it stops tonight.  High of 10 degrees this coming Thursday and more bad weather forecast for next weekend.
Now if I could just go into hibernation for the next 3+ months and have someone wake me up sometime in March!

Ya our vintage ones just did the oil I'll pick up that stabil 360 tomorrow and run it through both tanks. You could be like my detailer and just be a snow bird somewhere

That would be nice, but as it is my work doesn't let me telecommute from home let alone from down south. For the foreseeable future I will continue my 25 mile commute to work even if there is a blizzard happening!  I owe I owe, it's off to work I go!  :banghead:
