727 shifts late
« on: June 30, 2005 - 05:56:23 PM »

I am new to this forum so hello!
My 70 Challenger 440-6 pack
shifts great in all gears under
light to moderate acceleration. But under heavy
throttle it is fine between 1st and 2nd but really
is late from 2nd to 3rd. Even shifting manually
it really hesitates to go to third. Any ideas?
I took it to a guy who is highly recommended
and he wanted to know what kit was put in it.
He also showed me how to adjust the throttle linkage to change the
overall timing of the shifts.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!

I'll wait for the tech gurus but I'd say it's nothing more than adjusting the linkage like you sugested.

Thanks NZ440R/T :iagree: !

I tried adjusting the linkage and it does affect normal driving shifts
but doesn't seem to change my hard acceleration problem from 2nd to 3rd.
Hopefully I will be able to figure out soon!

Has the trans got a shift kit? Maybe it needs one or the bands etc in the old one are playing up?  :dontknow:

The car came with option A32 which is a 4:10 dana rear, 26 inch radiator, and power front disc brakes.
I will take some more pics  and throw them up soon!

I have to agree with 6pak2go

With 4:10's, this shouldn't be a problem. The tranny must have a shift kit in it. I know sometimes mine seems a little late on heavy acceleration. Boy what a kick it gives when it does shift though.  :grinyes: I love it. I know they can be adjusted to how hard they shift, but that would involve dropping the tranny. I guess the question here is do you have a shift kit?

you may need to change the governor in the rear of the tranny , the tailhousing needs to be removed to access the the governor

Thanks for the input!
Is the governor something that can be adjusted or modified
or does it have to be replaced?
Is this something in the scope of a good transmission person or is it something that
can be done at home?

Thanks again!

I had a govenor that was stuck before. The car would not shift out of first. Its not too hard to change. They sell them for different apps. If it works fine under normal driving, and its a true Hi po tranny, then it may be functioning correctly. What is the rpm where its shifting into drive? About 5500 rpms?
