Who's knowledgable about 4G & Yagi Antennas for internet access?
« on: January 25, 2017 - 07:17:15 PM »
Ok, Since I've been looking at rural living options & I have a good friend who lives in a rural location with poor internet access I'm hoping to learn about 4G options... Currently my buddy has Hughesnet... It's expensive & the service sucks... But some days I can use my cell phone as a mobile hotspot & actually stream videos on his computer.... Key word being "some days" I've been looking at antennas which I'm thinking can be mounted on the roof, possibly from the old TV antenna mast though some of my reading suggests mounting it away from steel.... Anyway, I get an antenna, get it mounted, apparently I need to keep the cable length pretty short  But what do I need to convert the signal to something I can either broadcast with a wireless router, would a standard cable router do this or?  And since I'd like to have internet out in the shop can I use Cat 6 from the cable router out to the shop?

Thanks for your Input....

We had Wild Blue some time back, similar to Hughes, and it is not cheap if you are on it much. Streaming is out of the question, unless you pay for more data. I have a buddy who is in your situation. Have not talked with him in awhile, I will see if I can get any info out of him. Another person was telling me you need a cord, called a dongle, and this will tie your phone to a laptop. Might want to ask the maker of your phone. I did do some asking at one of the phone departments awhile ago, and was told some phones will support what you want and some will not.  Not much help, but you should be able to find some avenue that will work and if I hear anymore info of use I will get back to you.

The days of needing a dongle to connect your phone came & went, If I wanted to stick with just using the phone I can & have used the mobile hot spot capability of my phone but since in the rural setting it only works "some days" I want to put a directional antenna maybe 50' up in the air above the nearby almond orchards which are typically kept to a maximum height of around 30'.... Getting above the foliage should improve the the signal strength & reliability.... I've done the research on antennas, lots of stuff out there, some are better than others... But I need to find out what to do with that signal.... If you go to the cellular providers they just want to supply their standard 4G Modem which works pretty well in town but it doesn't work three miles from the nearest tower & below a canopy of trees.... I know theres still a need for a Data plan, but there also needs to be a way to take the signal from the antenna & make it a usable Wifi signal...

If you have 4G LTE and want to put up and antenna and booster they are available.
Verizon placed one for an office building I worked in once. They supplied it free. Not this one but same idea.
I have looked at a few for my Trailer. Make sure you get one that has the correct frequency compatible with your carrier.
Consists of a outdoor antenna wired to a booster and indoor antenna.

Like this.

Have you checked whether there are other smaller internet providers in your area?  I am rural and there is a local provider that is operated by the local circuit court.  It is point-to-point, so as long as you can see their signal towers, you can get it.  The judge actually came out to check my site!  Speed is better than DSL but not as good as cable.  Better than Hughesnet though.  Never saw anything advertised from this company; my son found them on the web.

I bought point-to-point antennas to get internet out to my pole barn.  Haven't installed them yet.  It is 500' or so, so figured a better option than running CAT6.

I have a cell booster in my house and one in the shop,  both work fairly well.  Much better then the xplornet satellite internet we had before.

There's boxes that the local companies sell here called mifi,  they work by taking the cell signal and converting it to a wifi hotspot

Pretty much exactly what I was looking at.... Today I stopped by a local small specialized ISP to talk to their technical guy.. He was on the same page... I asked about the possibility of them adding an antenna in the area because theres allot of farmers/ranchers out that way with no coverage... He said they wouldn't erect a tower but if there was a tower nearby where they could lease space it was a possibility.... Theres an old TV transmitter site less than a 1/4 mile from my buddies property....  My buddy knows the property owner & we got the two of them together.....Good chance my buddy will have good internet very soon at a discounted price.....  Somedays things do work out...

Look like I was in left field on this, sorry, but looks like you are moving forward now. Talked with my friend who lives in the high mountains of central Idaho, he sent me this you-tube video on the We Boost system. I really learned a lot tonight. Let us know it it comes out.

No need to be sorry, your trying to help & I appreciate it, hopefully we all learned something... I know I have...

Funny angle on this thing, the owner of the antenna site & the representative if the ISP both said with the changes in DC it's a good time to build their businesses..
