Electronic Distributor air gap question
« on: January 26, 2017 - 02:17:12 PM »
Finally got around to checking the air gap on my new electronic distributor.  I discovered that the metal tooth (for lack of a better word)  on the magnetic pick up,  where you check the air gap, is angled closer to the reluctor at the bottom than the top.  In other words if I set the air gap for .08 at the top, the air gap at the bottom is between .07 and .06.  I don't see anyway to adjust the angle of the magnetic pickup.  Should I return the distributor or is this a big deal?  The instructions say the gap should be between .07 and .10, however, I assume that means evenly from top to bottom.  I don't know how much difference, if any, having the air gap adjustment at an angle will make.   :feedback:

Is this all teeth of the reluctor wheel or just one?  If it's all your pickup coil isn't properly aligned, the mounting bracket can be bent (very slightly) to correct the alignment.... I tend to set the gap to the tight side, tighter makes for a stronger signal....

Back in the 70's Snap On sold a tool designed to bend the pick up coil mount...

Thanks 1 Wild R/T, yes it's all the all the teeth on the reluctor wheel.   :2thumbs:  I was considering bending the mounting bracket, but wanted to see what others had to say first.

Honestly your coil is pretty darn close, I've seen them off by .020 top to bottom....  Your's is about .0015, I might consider just touching the high point with a file....  And set it close to .006, then operate the vacuum advance & see what happens to the gap... :22yikes:

Thanks Wild R/T.  I give the file a shot first.
