Chrysler 8 3/4 rear axle rebuild. (NEED TIPS)
« on: April 06, 2013 - 05:35:38 PM »
Ok guys so I am new to the site ...kinda... but for sure new to rebuilding a rear axle off of a 71 cuda...(does not seem all that complicated). But it does not have posi trac or sure grip.  :feedback: :feedback: :feedback:I have a 440 6 barrel going into the car so I want to make sure everything is at least sufficient enough to take to a drag strip on a off day  :burnout: . Can you guys give me any tips or suggestions on how to go about rebuilding and adding/modifying the rear axle to at least achieve better than stock.  :newbie:

Depending on your budget  you might be further ahead getting a new Dana from DrDiff (Cass) After others on here giving me the same advice that's what I did and sold the 8 3/4 while it was still in one piece.

Just passing on advice others gave me when I was considering re-doing the 8 3/4. The bare Dana without the disc brakes ( your 8 3/4 drums will bolt on) was around $1800. Doesn't take long to dump that into a 8 3/4...?

Oh, no argument; I'm just suffering from diff envy, that's all.  ;)

My understanding is that rebuilding the diff and setting it up correctly needs some specialist tools and knowledge.  I've never tried it myself but I've heard it's a job best left to the professionals.

8-3/4 are one of the easiest to set up, toughest part is getting the pinion depth right, (pulling the big bearing off, often multiple times, to change the shim). Don't worry too much about strength of the 8-3/4 (489 or 742) unless your doing 4 grand clutch drops, mine held up with no problems in 8 years of drag racing with an automatic and slicks @ 1.70 60' times, almost lifting the front wheels. And they're lighter than the Danas.
