I have begun to drive my cuda more & more. Although the coolant temp runs 170°-190°.. the external heat seems VERY hot. It's a warmed up 340 and I have the aluminized cotaed headers. When I lift up the shaker hood I just about burned myself on the hood hinges.. that's how hot it gets under the hood.

I have a clutch fan, but no fan shroud.. does that make such a difference? Also, I feels alot of the heat come through the fire wall.. I insulate under the carpet, but ther's too many rods & gadgets to do the literal firewall. Anny suggestions or thoughts. Internal temp is fine or average for a small block, but the external engine heat..is, well... HOT.   :fire:

Headers will always give off more heat than factory exhaust manifolds..cast iron manifolds make great heat sinks! A shroud will help the engine run a little cooler, and pull more air over the engine as well too. A under hood seal will also help pull more air thru the radiator, the seal that meets the radiator support at the front of the hood.

Just some easy things to try.

Often the problem has more to do with air flow through the engine compartment which seems to be more the problem you are having
 using a front spoiler may help by creating more vacuum under the car to help pull the heat out below the car

my 440 with headers is like that, and it has a big ol engine compartment of the 69 D200!

never in my life would I have thought of the spoiler! Dang psyco! your a genius! :worship:

hmmmm....most of the engines I have converted to headers seem to run cooler.The thinner tubes dissipate heat better than the heavy cast iron exhaust manifolds. The stock manifolds contain heat and take forever to cool down. Did you say your headers are ceramic coated? That might reduce some of the radiant heat you are describing. Also, do you have a hood blanket attached to the inside of the hood? That might help contain some of the heat from the outside surfaces.

Fortunately for you the operating temperature is where it needs to be. I have heard that the fan shroud can make a difference. You might give it a shot - it will funnel the front side airstream to cool the radiator more efficiently. Perhaps it will have a redirecting airflow affect away from the hood?

I have a .030 over 340 in a Challenger, running stock Mopar HP exhaust manifolds.

The outside of the engine has always run very hot, even though the engine does run cool internally.  It is hot to the point that I had to add an extra thick gasket for the carb since I was boiling fuel.

I have a shroud, etc.  Water Wetter helped a bit.  Always been that way, never did figure it out.  Engine does run strong.  Becomes an issue if I am stuck in traffic on a hot day where the heat has no place to go.

David - sounds like mine.. to the "T". I just can't imagine that they were this hot.. when purchased in 1971. I cannot put a blanket under the hood becasue it's a shaker.. haven't seen one for that yet. Driving.. no problem.. it's when I stop. I did put the fan shroud on.. and I think it helps.. plus gives it a more stock sleeper look. I also do have the stock clutch fan whic I've heard is pretty efficient.

I found that wrapping the headers had made a big difference in the engine compartment. I did noe that you have coated headers and most guys like to show them off.  But the wrap will contain the heat and allow it to transferr down the exhaust pipes, but you have to give up the looks of those nice coated headers. Your call, but the wrap will definitely make a big difference in the heat in the engine compartment.

from what I've heard though ,the wrap can trap the heat too well even melting the header or at least shortening it's life.Anyone else have input on this?

If your headers are getting that hot I've got a feeling you may be having a problem with your cylinder temp. Is there any white residue in the exhaust chambers or in the headers? Wondering if your lean burning.
