Name That Tune...Or Noise..
« on: March 25, 2017 - 05:17:47 PM »
I just fired my newly rebuilt 440 six pack for the first time and all went well,  except the noise in the upper end.   loud enough I can't pretend it's okay.

It has somewhere between a diesel sound and a sewing machine sound, sort of a heavy sewing machine would be the best description.   at all speeds,  and when you rev it up and let off it sounds like there is slack in something.  it runs great, lots of oil pressure and the oil is clean as a whistle.

I have a full 282  Lunati roller cam set up with Crane ductile rockers.    custom made Smith Brothers push rods  and FHR pistons at 10.1 to 1 .

My first thought is to run the vale adjustments again,  is there anything different about setting up a roller cam valve train?   do I need more preload ?    could the weight of the ductile rockers be too much for the springs ?   anything else I should check?

Mystery solved,  I noticed the  valve covers ( stock '70 )  have 4 rubbed dents in the baffles on each side.    the older rockes have HUGE bump on the back for some unknown reasn so I'll grind them down a touch.

But still since I have them off ,  my preload feels good but should I do anything different with it due to being roller lifters?
