Whats it worth...... "IF"
« on: March 20, 2017 - 05:58:48 PM »
This is just a "what if" question. Couple buddies and I got into a pretty good "discussion" coughargumentcough about what really counts while having a few adult beverages. YOU are now the official Jury !!  :D

70 Cuda clone. Has all the Cuda goodies and is in excellent condition. If it were a BS, street value is $50,000.
How much would you deduct for being a BH ?

Many variables and I'm new to the whole mopar thing, but I would guess 60-70% depending on how clean it was done, paint condition, engine, tranny, and overall street appeal

If its a clone, i'd say zero, no difference.
BH or BS wouldn't make a difference

So a $50,000 car is only worth $15,000 because its a clone ?!?!?   :22yikes:

I'm in that boat now. I have a 70 JH car that I'm working on. It was factory built with a big block 4 speed.  My guess is my JH car will be worth 80% of the same car in a JS. So your BH car could be a 40k car. If it were the exact same value, then everyone would always opt for the real deal. I would.

I'm just pulling this out of the air as I too am having an "adult beverage."    Haha

I tend to agree.  80%.

if the car was exactly the same thing but has BH, BP, or BS difference.

I also have a 71 JH car and I recently switched my insurance to Hagerty, while my car is under construction. I gave them my VIN but asked what are the stipulations for its value if you go beyond stock. Restomod, clone, etc. He asked me what engine I had (440) and I said I do have some R/T parts in my car but it will be a full rotisserie job as well, and while I don't expect to get original R/T 440 prices, I would like my car valued above the 383 2bbl (L code) that it is. I said in the long run I'd like my car insured for 40k (Give or take), once its complete. He said that shouldn't be a problem, but a picture will be required once complete. Until then he asked me what he thinks my car is valued at currently (it's a shell in final stages of body work) in which I said I feel it is currently worth 15k-20k. He thought that was fair and put down 20k for the car and another 15k in parts I have laying around.

So while that's an insurance point of view and not a consumer price, It's nice to know companies like Hagerty will work with you. As far as consumer prices I think a clone like a 440 4bbl hard top should be about 60-75% of the value of a original. However, that would depend to me on how rare the original really is. For example if you were to clone a convertible 71 4spd 426 Hemi Cuda, I wouldn't expect millions of dollars or even 60% at that point, just for the simple fact that I believe it takes away too much from the rare original ones. So as far as what a clone is worth, I think it really just depends on what it is you cloned, and how well the job was done. After all the point of a clone is that you can drive it and have fun w/o as much worry of damage to an original and expensive car.

In the end R/T or not (Cuda or Barracuda) it really just depends on what someone is willing to pay for it. You could get R/T money from a non R/T if someone is willing to pay it! You just gotta find the right buyer.

My 2 cents for what its worth :)

I don't think anymore than 15%, and that may be too much.

I recall selling a 1968 Coronet, that was not a bee, but had all of the bee elements.  First guy that came to see the car asked "Is it a real bee?"  I told him no.  His response "Could of fooled me" and he offered me what I was asking.

My point is that if the car is done right the "WIW" is in the eye of the person with the cash.  You can ask anything you want for a car, you just gotta find the right buyer.
