Starter Relays keep burning up

My thoughts are you have a signal problem, not a relay problem. (But make sure that wire is solidly grounded). Relay grounding is not an issue because you hard wired it to gnd. But the yellow signal wire may be intermittent on you. How about checking the connections in the bullhead connector and the connections at the steering column?

THink there is some new technology as far as DC clamp meters, and that is what you need to measure the amperage. Use to be, a shunt with a calibrated meter for the shunt was the way to go. Progress has changed.

This one might do what you want, but that involves more $$$$ . Not sure if any of the parts places have one to see what your starter is drawing, but might be worth checking and asking them.

Unfortunately not yet. I haven't had time to mess with it. I did talk to some people at the Mopar Alley show and the consensus was that all currently produced starter relays are manufactured in China and are a crap shoot if they are good or not and my best option is to find a NOS unit or an original in a junk yard. So for now what I will do is thermally isolate the starter (just a good idea in general), pull a used one or two from a junk yard, and in case of emergency I will wire in a remote starter switch to the starter relay so if I get stranded again instead of jumping a screwdriver across the terminals I can just hit the remote button (not ideal, but will work for now).

You can get a Cole-Hersey starter button (or sim) and wire on a few alligator clips for testing/emergency. Connect up to the two large terminals on the start relay and push the button. The starter should crank if the relay is bad.
