So it looks like you uses one of these?  So the fuel cap is just a spring pushing down on the inlet.  When pressure builds, fuel does not leak out?

Yep, that's the one. I cannot answer about the fuel as I don't have the car running yet, however I did this once before on a Cuda and as I recall it was fine. That said, you might be able to find or modify a normal twist in gas cap to go under it or remove the sealing apparatus (wouldn't pop open anymore).
