Hood struts for 70 cuda
« on: August 03, 2017 - 12:04:30 AM »
Hey everyone, I installed a fiberglass hood on my 70. I was told by the body shop that stock steel springs would be too strong for the fiberglass hood, so I left them off. Now I need a way to hold my hood open while working or at the shows. Is there somebody that sells a small strut that can be installed on a stock hinge?

Ray,
keep honking I'm reloading

I've seen where people use a piece of metal rod with a hook in each end. They install the piece in place of the hood spring. Obviously, it's not as nice as a strut since you have to install/remove it all the time. It's just an idea if you can't find a strut.

I Googled "AAR hood spring" and some pictures popped up.  You can see how the piece of rod works to keep the hood open.  The link will show a billet hinge with a strut on it.  The picture is from ProTouring.com.  I don't know who sells them.

That picture is my car. I tried two different manufacturers of T/A hood springs and none of them worked. Either it wouldn't hold the hood up or it bowed the hood.  I now use just the stainless 3/8" rod with two bends, easy and cheap!

Go to Ace, Home Depot, etc and buy a rod. Paint it your body color and most people will never notice it.

This is the TA spring. It is longer and narrower then the metal hood springs.

I went to ACE hardware and bought a set of turn buckles.

See pic they work great.....with the end screws you can adjust the hood opening.
