Trunk weatherstripping
« on: October 12, 2017 - 09:31:57 PM »
Two days ago replaced the weather stripping on my '73 Challenger with Year One's Super Soft Late 73-74 MOPAR "E" Body Trunk Seal. Today, put the trunk lid back on and had to raise the trunk latch 1/2" to lock the trunk because the trunk seal is too tall and had to slam the trunk lid to get it to shut. So parked the car in the sun with a thermometer on the lid. It got to 110 degrees. I then put a large Coleman ice chest on it, filled it with about 12 gallons of water. After about three hours the trunk lid settled level with the rear fenders. When I took the ice chest off the lid the lid rose about 1/4" above the fenders. So put the ice chest full of water back on the lid. I'll see tomorrow if the lid sits flush with the rear fenders. Anyone had this issue?

I had this exact issue on my 70 Bee. It made the lid sit high at the back and it looked terrible. I could not do anything to make it go away. I searched around and found a really soft gasket. That made the problem go away. I can't recall which brand I used...maybe Metro? As I recall, I had two different brands on hand and used the one which felt the squishiest. I recall for sure that the rock hard gasket came from Year One.

I had the same issue on my doors. The new rubber was so damn rigid that you really had to slam the door so hard, you thought the glass would shatter. Left it in the sun with door closed, etc. but no help. Again, found a softer gasket that made all the difference.

Today, parked the Challenger in the sun. It was a wild fire hazy sunny day and temperature got up to 78 degrees. Placed a black velvet welding blanket on the trunk lid. Temperature of the blanket rose to 110 degrees! Placed cast iron 25 lb Olympic weights on the edges of the trunk lid four hours. Removed weights. Trunk lid had settled a bit more. Lowered trunk latch 1/4" and slammed trunk lid shut. The trunk lid almost sits flush with the fenders. Don't like having to slam the trunk lid closed so put weights back on the trunk lid.Parked Challenger back in garage. Should be happy with the outcome tomorrow. Forget about doing this during the winter.
