Installing Seat Covers
« on: July 19, 2005 - 03:15:34 PM »
Hey Everybody!

Hope all is well.  I was wondering how diffiicult it is to remove the old seat covers and replacing them with the new ones from Legendary.  I'm a novice, and I'll gladly admit I have no idea what I'm doing.  But, I was thinking about doing these seats myself.  With the money spent, I don't want to mess up my new covers.  Is there a big possibility that I probably will mess them up if I decide to them my self?  Should I learn how to do recovering on cheaper stuff?  I definitely don't want to buy a second set of this upholstery just because I was trying to save a few bucks here.  I'll bite the bullet if I have to!  Just wanting to know what y'all think.

I've heard installing headliners should definitely be left up to the pro's, so I'm not even going to attempt that.

Thanks for all your help!

Winston

Hey Winston.  We just finished our Chally and it was our very first project (read, amatures).  We had the same concerns you now have about redoing the interior yourself.  After a few members encouraged us that we could do it, we gave it a shot.  Glad we did.  It wasn't too hard to do.  All you need is patience and a good pair of hog ring pliers...and a hot sunny day would help to. I would say it's definately a two person job.

I had some Amish people recover my dad's seats for 120 bucks and they came out amazing. So if you live near amish people, you might want to investigate that option.

We got a tip to:

Lay the new skins out in the sun for a few minutes ( 5-10) Warming them is suppose to help get them on.  Courtesy of some B body owner at a local car show. His seats looked pretty good.

slipping a thin plastic garbage bag (kitchen 30 gallon I think, like the white kind) over the foam, is supposed to help getting the new skins on as well.   JUst leave the bag in there, dont worry about getting it out.       Foam -> plastic bag -> new vinyl

forget where I saw that tip/trick though.

Thanks for all the input.  I may go ahead and give it a shot when my dad can get down to help me out.  I can at least put half the blame on him if I mess it up.    Thanks again.

The sun is your best friend in this project!!  We did ours in January and had to use a blow dryer to get some heat on them to make them plyable.  You can do it Winston!
