Factory markings/ on a 1972 340 Challenger Rally
« on: October 12, 2017 - 08:41:56 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I recently bought a 1972 Challenger Rally 340, auto (727), 3.55 Suregrip, with a fresh restoration. I learnt from my last car that I am not into body work but I love taking the time to put on all those little details. A factory stamping here, a mark there etc... Since my new car is painted top and bottom my winter project is to detail/ wax the under carriage including adding some of those marks on the sure grip, paint marks here and there etc...

Does any one have any pictures of the original markings underneath a 72 Challenger? or markings that were applicable to all years? I am not looking to steal away some super rare restoration knowledge here I just enjoy the small details that bring a car together and it's a great way to keep me out of trouble over the winter.

Some info about the car that may help:

Original Rally car
727 auto
3.55 suregrip
Dual exhaust through the valence
Built in Hamtrack, later build sequence number is in the 440000 numbers
Original Canadian car, bought in Montreal.
All original but not numbers matching motor, currently has a 69 340.
Real Top banana car

Thanks for any help!

Cleaned off my mostly original front end from my 70 Challenger 340 convertible, found many front end paint markings on the end link nuts, center link and other areas.
I also have a chart of the colors used on the front end markings, some put there by the manufacturer, some by the assembly line workers as inspection marks.
Hope this helps.
1st picture- center link - blue paint
suspension nuts usually in orange.

Sure grip markings
The white and orange stripes on the bottom of the unit are the markings that indicate a 3:55 and sure grip

I have the numbers  10 &  22 stenciled in yellow on the side of the carrier indicates assembly date of the carrier Oct 22, 69 in my case.
