Challenger Trunk lid-noise ?
« on: October 11, 2017 - 01:32:14 PM »
Hey all...this summer I passed 10,000 miles since I finished restoring my 70 challenger. Last couple rides out Ive noticed a slight banging, rattle noise from the back of the car. Kinda like the trunk lid wasnt quite shut tight. Anyway it was closed nice and tight but while back there I notice quite a lot of lateral slop ( left and right). Seemed kinda odd, but I supposed could be the noise I was hearing. Seems like the movement is mostly in the trunk hinges itself. Is anybody else able to duplicate this on their cars? I am just wondering if this normal on cars to have the trunk lid moving that much? Or...perhaps I have a problem to deal with...really appreciate any input
Thanks!

I should clarify that with the trunk lid closed and latched, I can move the trunklid left and right almost quarter inch each way.

I just checked my beat up, unrestored 70. I can move the trunk lid back and forth about an 1/8" only. 1/16" each way. It is a little clunky in sound as I move it back and forth so maybe that's what you're hearing. I should note though that I do not have the weatherstrip in place anymore which is why I can get it t move at all. I would think that with weatherstrip on, it should be tighter and not able to move by hand.

You might try closing the lid with slips of paper here and there around the trunk lid. Once closed, tug on them and see if any are loose. If so, I'd start there.

Doubt it's your trunk lid but anything is possible... Check the top shock mounts, if they get ever so slightly loose they will bang pretty good...   Also the trunk torsion springs sometimes rattle...

I agree . My cuda was doing the same thing and I swore it was something in the trunk. It was the top shock bolts that were a little loose. Didn't take much to make it rattle like hell.

Do you have the rubber bumpers installed on the ends of the truck lid?  Just curious?

Yes I have the rubber bumpers on the trunk lid but I think I found the culprit and I found the little rubber hose was off the torsion bars in the center section of the rods. An easy one for a change haha thanks for the suggestions everyone, have to remember that when I pack the trunk right full of crap on our next long wknd road trip.

Also the push nuts on the trunk hinge were slightly loose so I pushed me back tight and the lid doesn't move as much anymore
