Funny Noise
« on: July 12, 2005 - 01:06:11 PM »

When ever I make a sharp left hand turn under power with my 74 chally there is a noticeable bump/pop that seems to come from the front drivers corner of the car. This noise will occur as I’m straightening the front tires. Going down the highway or just driving casually around town you never hear it. But the moment you straighten the tire from a  left hand turn the sound happens. My brother inlaw (who has been an alignment tech for ten years) said it sounded to him like ball joints. With this information in hand I went to my favorite parts house and picked up the upper and lower ball joints that my Bro inlaw installed. His observation of the old parts where that they appeared to be in good condition. Well, its going to be a few days before I can test drive the car so is there anyone out there who has experienced this?

I had a similar issue with my H2 where the cambolts that hold the upper control arm became loose and allowed the bolt to pivot.  This caused the arm to move in and out under stress when cornering or over some bumps accomanied by a loud pop.  In my case I had one side that was loose and would happen mostly when turning one direction.  I can see were the same thing could happen to the front E-Body suspension.  Especially if the tabs that hold the cam bolts in place are broken or bent.

OK, dumb question no.1. Where are the cam bolts located and what do they look like. I assume the upper control arm area?

They are in the upper arm and attach the arm to the the car.  There should be two per side and are called cam bolt because the washers are offset.  From inside the engine bay they can be seen at the top of this picture.  Make sure the washers are seated down inside the tabs also.
