6.4 Hemi into my 70 Challenger

Hey guys,

I'm gathering information for a proposed project to swap a 2012 6.4 Hemi with it's 6 speed manual trans into my 1970 Challenger.

Just getting started with the research and looking at the Modern Muscle Xtreme Wiring Harness, although it indicates it is for a 2014 and newer Hemi if I am reading it right.

I would like to get this 2012 Hemi given it is low mileage, has the 6 speed trans, is local to me and at what I think is a good price of $8,000.

What do you think?

You would need to open up the transmission tunnel and modify the crossmember to fit the tranny in case you don't know.

Affirmative!

While the Motor and Trans will also come with the ECU and gas pedal, I don't expect to have the key, or ignition switch or the wiring harness for it.  I understand there are after market manufactures, although some have indicated they are for the 2014 model year and newer and wanting to determine if getting a 2012 model year motor and trans is going to be problematic or not?

I'm getting some feedback that the stock six speed trans may not be a good fit without replacing the flanged rear tail shaft.

Of course there's also the matter of improving the suspension to support all of that new found horsepower.  A four link in the rear is pretty much a given, although it's the front suspension that will really involve the big bucks!

Ugh.....

I'm sure you can find other harnesses/computers that will work w/your 2012.

You may want just the engine and get the 6-speed from SST that has it's Magnum T56 configured for the shifter position in the right place.

Good luck with your engine swap, but I wouldn't worry too much about the rear suspension handling the power. People have run Super Stock versions with the OEM 8.75" diff and if you really fear it, Strange makes a S60 which is their version of the hemi-spec Dana that you won't break with that engine, do what you will to it. Pre '65 Mopars used a flange final connection in the trans and you may be able to blend the flange yoke to the existing drive shaft as they did. Good luck  :cheers:

I hate to break it to you but "big bucks" are going to be a common theme when doing anything like this. For that matter; building any Mopar requires large infusions of $$; I am building a 73 Cuda with a stroked 340 (416) and 833 4 speed; I have kept tracks of everything I have spent on this car and I am very close to $50K. Yes they can be built for a lot less, but this is definitely not a cheap hobby.
